Re: coil for ace 90

8/100ths of an ohm??? Would you mind double checking that specification? It just seems sufficiently close enough to zero that common volt/ohm meters of the day back in the '60's probably couldn't distinguish between zero and .08 ohms. (of course I could be wrong about that) That's what the book say...

Re: coil for ace 90

The early Ace 90 primary coil resistance is 0.08 ohm. Did you see less than 0.8 or less than 0.08?

Re: jets, Need an Answer please

Depending on the carburetor style, wouldn't the shorter jet mean that you are going to be altering the proximity to the fuel level set by the float? Perhaps it does, but since the main jet runs immersed at the bottom of the bowl, I don't think it makes a difference. What a shorter one might do, ass...

Re: Road Toad Ignition Parts?

Clarence, there are two test parameters for the coil. One checks for resistance in the primary and secondary windings. The other is an isolation test, in which you blank off the points with a strip of paper and supply momentary voltage to the condenser wire lead. Every time you remove the voltage le...

Re: coil for ace 90

Just spoke with Bruce, who told me about your issue with the early 90. The idea was posed that perhaps later 90 or Ace 100 system would cross-fit your bike. I have never seen an Ace 90 up close so I don't know, but I do have a running Ace 100B lighting and ignition system from backing plate to spark...

Clear tends to lift decals. I would clear coat, then do a decal if you want to.

Re: Combat Wombat Paint

Check out the OD green color in the Camo paint selection at the auto store. It is very similar to the green self-etching primer, but is a top coat (flat) but is UV stable, whereas the primer is not.

Re: Road Toad Ignition Parts?

Seeing the panel lights flicker when kicking suggests that your lighting coil is operative, and that you apparently don't have a functioning battery. The lighting side does not interact with the ignition and the battery does not matter at the moment. The suggested steps above are all correct process...

Re: Broken off key

Yes, generally. The problem is that the magneto makes voltage that ranges all over the place, something like 8 to 15 volts, and it tends to surge back and forth with throttle on and off. The battery eliminates (or greatly reduces) power pulses to the wiring, so even if your headlight dims a bit when...

A new seat cover and a good clean and polish, and it looks like it would be back in the game -- as long as it runs. Can't hardly lose at that price.

Re: Combat Wombat Paint

Oddly, I have used that same combination to match so-called olive drab for my early CJ5, and it comes out pretty close to the WWII version of Army OD Green. Personally, I don't think the end result is quite as nice (rich and true) as a gloss color coat would be because the primer is a matte coat and...

Re: Broken off key

To answer the question you asked, you should not leave the ignition turned "on" constantly, and the kill button only grounds the coil momentarily. It doesn't turn anything off, ignition or otherwise. It only grounds the coil so it won't fire while the button is down. If you have one of the...

Re: triple tree bearings

We used to charge $17.50 back in the mid 70"s, half of which I got, the shop got the rest. I don't recall ever having to disassemble a steering head just to service a bike, but I have done it to my own Hodaka more than once. The bearing assembly is essentially an open race assembly so it tends ...

Re: triple tree bearings

I would agree, for technical reasons. Ball bearings carry an adequate load, and have far less drag than tapered bearings, which are more suited for heavy rotating loads, subjected to loads from varying directions (top to bottom, side to side, in the same installation). Wheel bearings in cars and tru...

Re: Points

Since the function of the taper shaft is to generate friction between shaft and flywheel, I would agree not to lube it. I don't think I have ever seen a taper shaft rust shut because the fit is so tight. Even the tapered axle shafts on the rear of my '68 Kaiser were clean when I took them apart for ...

+1. Verify function before ordering a new coil as they are not quite cheap these days. Also consider that the coil may be good, but the spark plug lead may not be. There is a tech article on the SH website regarding replacing the spark lead through minor surgery that anyone with a Dremel can do, sho...

Re: Main Jet setting at 4000 ft Please Help

I guess capacitance and resistance testing must have changed since I was in the biz. I will bow out of this discussion... Capacitance is measured in Farads, resistance in Ohms. They are not interchangeable measures, nor are they looking at or for the same things. The resistance seen in a capacitor ...

I agree with Ed. Accuracy of the tool aside, math is math. Inch pounds torque and foot pound torque are the same measure stated differently. This is like using decimal measures, i.e. 2 meters can also be stated as 2000mm. Doesn't change a thing. As for accuracy of the tool, most inexpensive store-bo...

Re: Needle Jet Removal VM20

I have to refer to the shop manual for that question, having not done an engine case tear down since the late 70's, but the pictures in the shop manual show the clutch side seal inboard from the bearing, so yes, the cases have to be split to get that one out. Write to either Paul at Strictly Hodaka ...

Re: Increasing compression Ace 100

Cruising through my 1972 Clymer's shop manual, covering Hodaka 90's and 100's from 1964 to 1972, the Ace 100 and 100B compression is shown as 80 to 150 psi. That's a pretty broad range. Curiously, the 100 MX Super Rat of the day is shown as only 85 psi assuming the piston and ring are broken in for ...
