Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Tool of choice is an air driven die grinder with carbide cutters. Here's the finger ports in the cylinder wall. Better practice a lot on an old cylinder before attempting this at home. Easy to ruin a cylinder by cutting ports too high and not staying in the lines. Rebore will be required if you ding...

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

I did get started on the reed valve conversion of the B+ today and have stopped to show you the progress. The reed manifold has a much larger hole than the original manifold and one of the steps is to match the new manifold to the cylinder. A marking pen and scribe show what we have to remove for a ...

Re: Victor’s Wombat Combat!

Hey Victor, air box lookin' good, ouch on the broken case! No loads on the front of that case, how's the rest of it? Weld or even patch and paint maybe? Consoling, ha ha. Maxie

Re: Victor’s Wombat Combat!

Now, for those following this thread, I have a reed valve ported Combat Wombat motor I’m going to put in this Wombat frame. My question is, what is the appropriate sized carb to use with a reed valve 125? Surely not just the 28mm which comes stock on a piston port only Combat Wombat? Should I go wi...

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Hey Matt. Starting on the process soon. Fairly straightforward as you'll see. I'll just add some finger ports coming out of the intake and some matching holes in the piston, bigger carb. Stay tuned I always say! Maxie.

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Updates on the project. Crankcase rebuild with new seals and bearings. New kickstart shaft and machined cage from Greg at California Hodaka. This and another engine torn down recently had the same problem. Cracked and/or broken cage with pitted faces on the shaft. Back together. Cool new clutch piec...

Al, here's a picture and drawing of a couple of approaches. Nice article in the Vol. 2 #25 Resonator also.

Re: Engine to shifter case stud repair.

That's a nice fix. But your idea about a Male- Female adapter is brilliant. I just wish I'd have been sharp enough to figure out that idea. Outstanding work! I can't claim that one Al. An article has been published on this method. All these things work. Gotta keep 'em going! Someone should manufact...

Re: Engine to shifter case stud repair.

Thanks Gang for all the input. Here's my final that seems safe, strong, secure and relatively easy. Mill, drill and tap the crankcase with a spacer. I'm starting to shy away from welding solutions on aluminum cases as these oil soaked cases can be difficult to weld or at least hard to find a welder ...

Engine to shifter case stud repair.

Somewhere I saw a bolt-on repair for this unfortunate malady. It was a plate or bracket bolted to these bolts that supported a replacement stud. Looks to be possible to build but someone probably has one for sale. Any clues? Maxie

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Some parts and direction on the project. This B+ will have some Hodaka hop-ups of the day. Check out this Hodaka 2-bolt reed manifold assembly right out of the original package! Tires located and in hand, mounted actually. A couple of different head options, Webco or Model 93 Super Rat? A 24mm Womba...

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Hey Matt. Just a couple of pix from an old project showing a before and after of Hodaka shocks. About ten minutes on a bench grinder with a steel brush. Not perfect but an unbelievable difference.

Matt, these things have thick chrome. Mostly a steel brush on a bench grinder and not much time. Give it a try, quite surprising!

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Sheesh, lotsa Dremel time represented here. Like hours. Grease crud and rust begone. Bars and shocks looked hopeless but came around at least until we set the standard. Wheels, always the worst but these look good. Frame degreased and ready for a blast. Two good crankcases with usable cranks out of ...

Re: old man going north

Elderflower Varda for sure. Our property came with a story of another Old Man who lived here, picked Elderberries and the flowers to make and even sell Elderflower and Elderberry wine. The old homestead still stands today. This part is true. Really. On with the story as the real Old Man tells it alm...

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Off to the blaster. These plastic composite masks work good and I'm starting to get a collection of these things. Decruding on iron or even final finish on aluminum cylinders. A couple of B+ cylinders, I've got a few ideas for the project. Maybe a stock set-up and a modified example. We'll see. Plot...

Re: Victor’s Wombat Combat!

Like the name Victor! I guess that is what the one I have is, a 94 with reed and Combat stuff. Looks to be a fun project coming up! I'll be keeping an eye on your project! Here's a shot that shows how you can pivot the 94 air box to compensate for the lengthened intake. I do have the 95 cylinder for...

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Ah ha. Now I see what is happening. This metal automotive seal was used by the PO. Looks like it was working except for some extra void in the crankcase. One I've not seen before! I'll put that on the list of discovered anomalies in rebuilding. Was it still backwards?

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Just a DPO one I've not seen before. After 47 years, maybe I should peek inside this engine and refresh the seals. Visually, not counting external crud, this looks to be a fairly low mileage engine that's never been opened. Wrong. All looks fine but someone's been in here as the clutch side crankcas...

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Thanks Matt! One thing I don't have is a street legal Hodaka. This B+ project could fill that void. On the bland side this could be restored to a near mint example but there many fine examples existing. I always saw Hodakas as base units, a start to a personalized modified machine that expresses the...

Hey Matt. Well the pump hisses, haven't really tried it on a tire. The Wombat. Three actually, in varying stages from this one to a boat anchor with no engine. I did find a Combat Wombat cylinder, carb and head In the pile. Could be an interesting 125 project with lights and performance. Lotsa optio...

Re: Instructions for Ace 5sp

My Ace 90 got the close-ratio 5-speed, one of the first as a dealer at the time. A cool old guy at the local machine shop did the work. We didn't have any Ace 100s to compare but now you do, should you have an extra crankcase laying around. Make the old one like the later one. Check out the Close-ra...

Re: Maximum B+ Project!

Hey thanks Gang! First step, the exploded view. Not as nice as it looks but a good specimen to work with. Typical 47 year-old bike that has that oil/dust concrete-like stuff plus rust. This will have to be addressed down to the last bolt. A beginning here. Exciting even! Maxie

Maximum B+ Project!

For those not on Facebook. Max has been rummaging around the neighborhood barns and discovered some treasures and next projects. Check out this 1971 Ace 100B+ that has just emerged from decades of darkness to be re-born! Catchy name for the project, a nice ring to it I thought, Maximum B+ Project. E...
